Big Book Quiz 2018

Students from our Trust secondary schools had an exciting time at this year’s Big Book Quiz, battling it out in quiz rounds, taking part in physical challenges and meeting best-selling author Ross Welford.

The action-packed quiz is an annual event and the questions focused on books in four categories:  ‘Mind Your Head’, ‘I Can’t Remember the Title But the Cover is Blue’, ‘A Picture Speaks a Thousand Words’ and ‘It’s a Mystery’. There were four rounds of questions and the raucous physical activities linked to the books including eating muffins wearing latex gloves, juggling and wrapping students in toilet rolls!

Teams from Brooke Weston Academy, Corby Business Academy, Corby Technical School and Thomas Clarkson Academy all took part at the event hosted at Corby Business Academy with CBA teams coming first and third while the Book Nerds from TCA took the runner-up spot.

The winning Oz team from CBA.

CBA’s Librarian Amy McKay said: ‘It was a fantastic day and wonderful to see so many students from across the Brooke Weston Trust celebrating a love of books and reading.  They had been reading 20 selected books since term two and their knowledge was incredible – unsurprisingly it was a fiercely fought competition.  Ross Welford, author of Time Travelling With A Hamster which was one of the quiz books, gave a talk about his road to author-stardom, he was very funny and an inspiration to listen to. Many participants, and their accompanying staff, wore fancy dress and a display of fantastic costumes were on show – including Mary Poppins, Mad Hatters, Tweedledum & Tweedledee, the World’s Worst Children and the Hungry Caterpillar.  As well as answering questions participants took part in physical challenges based on the books they’d read; these activities including juggling, punching a piñata, speed unwrapping and mummification.  Team Oz were the overall winners, claiming the trophy for CBA for the second year running!’

Charlotte Fletcher, a Year 7 student from Brooke Weston Academy said: ‘It was like a mini field trip, we saw Corby Business Academy and their facilities. I really enjoyed seeing other groups participate, it was interesting to see their ideas and how they had memorized the books. It was really fun to have a guess at some of the questions you didn’t know but the physical activities were the best bit.’

Congratulations to the winning teams:

1st Place = Oz (CBA)

2nd Place = Book Nerds (TCA)

3rd Place = Down the Rabbit Hole (CBA)
