The following courses are aimed at all staff who are looking to develop their knowledge of safeguarding, mental health and behaviour management skills. Some of these courses will be run by our partners Northamptonshire Teaching School Hub, they will be charged separately and will be held at Brooke Weston Academy.
Safeguarding for DSL Refresher - Led by Jill Sneddon

Working together to safeguard children (BWT Staff only) - Led by James Down
This course is underpinned by Working Together (2018) and is essential for any staff involved in undertaking early help assessments or working with statutory services. The training will deepen understanding of the roles, responsibilities, and constraints of agencies who work with children and young people, drawing upon learning from child safeguarding practice reviews. Delegates will explore the role of the Safeguarding Partnership and how to successfully apply local safeguarding thresholds to secure support for children and families. Through interactive exercises, the course seeks to promote and develop effective information sharing and multi-agency working, and increase knowledge and confidence in relation to implementing effective early help, completing high-quality referrals and applying protocols for escalation.

Adult Mental Health First Aid - Led by Nicy Turney
This is a two day practical course which gives delegates a deeper understanding of mental health and the factors that can affect people’s wellbeing. It includes
• Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues.
• Gives confidence to step in, reassure and support a person in distress.
• Enhances interpersonal skills such as non-judgemental listening and knowledge to help someone recover their health by guiding them to appropriate support.
Research and evaluation shows that taking part in a MHFA England course boosts knowledge and confidence in dealing with mental health issues. On completion you will be certified Adult Mental Health First Aider. This session will be held at Brooke Weston Academy and will be subject to an additional charge.

Safer Recruitment Training - Led by Jill Sneddon
Gain the safeguarding skills you need in order to better protect children whilst recruiting teaching and non-teaching staff to roles within an educational setting. This session will be held at Brooke Weston Academy and will be subject to an additional charge.

Online Safety Lead Training (BWT staff only) - Led by Alan Mackenzie
This course will focus on the 4 C’s (content, contact, conduct and commercialism) to take a deep dive into gaming, YouTube and social media. Throughout I will give practical examples of issues I have found whilst in schools and I will give advice in relation to the best, free educational resources and how to engage children in online safety. We will also look at the best ways of engaging parents and how to develop an online safety strategy.

New to BWT - Safeguarding & child protection training (BWT staff only) - led by Sarah Fleming & James Down
This course provides a basic introduction to safeguarding & child protection. The course will explore early help, safeguarding and child protection and describe your role and responsibilities in relation to safeguarding. Delegates will develop and understanding of the emerging safeguarding risks facing children and young people, the signs and indicators of abuse and neglect and factors that can increase a child’s vulnerability to harm or abuse. The course will explain how to record and report safeguarding concerns, including how to raise safeguarding concerns about the conduct of colleagues.

Harmful/Sexual behaviour training (BWT staff only) - Led by James Down
This course will explore the nature and prevalence of harmful sexual behaviour in young people. Delegates will explore how to develop an effective whole-school approach to preventing and responding to harmful sexual behaviour, including applying the statutory guidance in relation to child-on-child sexual violence and sexual harassment. The course will explore effective risk assessment and intervention for children displaying or exposed to harmful sexual behaviour.

One day emergency First Aid training for schools (BWT staff only) - Led by Nigel Barrett
This course gives confidence with often worrying topics such as Anaphylaxis and Asthma. It’ll well prepare you for an emergency situation both in and out of school - and centres around building an emergency plan, ready to quickly kick in should an emergency arrive. Attendees will receive a certificate on completion of this course. There will be an extra charge of £10 per delegate to cover the cost of first aid equipment and certifications.

Graded Care Profile 2 (Neglect) (BWT staff only) - Led by James Down
This licensed course will provide delegates with the tools and techniques to identify and assess neglect in children through a comprehensive, practical, evidence-based assessment tool for evaluating levels of parental care. Delegates will consolidate their knowledge of neglect, and better understand the challenges of identifying neglect the lived experiences of children. Upon completion, delegates will have access to the Graded Care Profile tool.

Mental Health First Aid Training (Children) - Led by Matt Loftus
Two day face to face course across four manageable sessions. Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues. Learning takes place through a mix of presentations, group discussions and work shop activities. On completion you will be certified Youth Mental Health First Aider. This session will be held at Brooke Weston Academy and will be subject to an additional charge.

Safer Recruitment - Led by Kathryn Pithey & James Down
Our Safer Recruitment Training ensures that you understand your safer recruitment obligations in accordance with Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE). We will provide you with advice and best practice which you can embed in your schools to ensure a culture of safeguarding, even before you start recruiting staff. This session will be held at Brooke Weston Academy and will be subject to an additional charge.

Managing allegations (BWT staff only) - Led by Kathryn Pithey & JAmes Down
Our Managing Allegations training is aimed at the Senior Leadership team, Governors and the DSL at all academies. The course focuses on the current law and guidance and explains the role of staff in school, the Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO) and the police. The course also looks at considerations and advice around suspension, working with the LADO and other agencies and managing investigations. Delivered using real life case studies that our course leader has been involved in.

School Attendance Local Network Event (BWT staff only) - Led by Callum Reilly
This half-day event will bring together local Attendance Leads/Officers, providing opportunities to develop networks through sharing a range of strategies, case studies and ways of working. The aim of the event is to provide attendees with a variety of practical strategies and tools for tackling attendance and persistent absence.
