Breakfast Club visitors at Compass Primary Academy

Last week, Compass Primary Academy welcomed two special guests to its thriving breakfast club, Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson MP and Rosie Wrighting, MP for Kettering.

Their visit highlighted the importance of breakfast clubs in supporting children’s wellbeing and learning.

Ms Phillipson praised the initiative, saying “We know that if children get a good breakfast it can set them up for the day. They have time to socialise with their friends and get ready to start learning. The breakfast club here is the first of 750 that we’ve opened. We want to roll them out across the country. The work that’s going on here is at the heart of that roll out.”

Compass Primary signed up as an early adopter of the scheme. What started with just a dozen children has grown rapidly, with 150 to 200 pupils now attending regularly - around a quarter to a third of the whole school.

Ms Wrighting added “It’s been a really heart-warming visit firstly just to see on an organisational level how much goes into this but also how much the children really appreciate it. We had conversations with kids and they said that coming here means they can have a proper breakfast, their parents can get to work, they can socialise with their friends and then go into the classroom ready to start the day and learn.”

Earlier this year, Peckover Primary School also welcomed Stephen Morgan, Minister for Early Education, to its breakfast club - showing that across the Trust, schools are embracing the power of a good breakfast to support pupils’ wellbeing, readiness to learn, and family routines.
