Careers Day success at Peckover

Thank you to everyone who volunteered to interview our students at Peckover Primary School as part of Careers Day, and well done to all our students who were so well turned out and put in maximum effort.

Our Year 6 students each applied for jobs from a huge variety and had up to nine separate interviews over the course of the morning. They had to ensure they were prepared and turned up for interview on time. They each had handwritten their CVs and were given practical tasks relating to the jobs they were applying for.

The interviews were conducted by 37 professionals, including some of our Governors, who had all volunteered their time and representatives from the Trust. Thanks to them the students had a very valuable learning experience. Careers Day was the culmination of a series of events which helped to boost students’ self confidence and prepare them for transition into Year 7.

Teacher Mrs Kendal said: ‘This was the best Careers Day yet. We had one student who got five jobs and a couple of the girls got three each. There were some who weren’t successful but all the children looked very smart and the professionals were really impressed by them.

‘At the end each interviewer fed back the student's strengths and weaknesses. Some had tasks,  for instance, they had to wire something up for the electrician’s post. The helicopter pilot had to fly and land a drone and prospective nurses had to put the model of a body back together. It was amazing.

‘The interviewer had to choose just one person for the role  so the children were desperate to know who was successful. If they learn to make sure their tie is straight, or to keep good eye contact when they go for an interview then it has all been worth it!'
