BWA staff donate reading scheme books to OVPS

Brooke Weston Academy’s Principal and Literacy co-ordinator visited neighbouring Oakley Vale Primary School to lead a story telling session and donate a new reading scheme to the reception students.

Principal Pete Kirkbride and Lauren Fitzjohn presented Reception class with a box full of reading scheme books which focuses on phonics and builds up literacy skills. They also read a book each to the class, with Mrs Fitzjohn reading ‘Oh No George!’ by Chris Haughton and Mr Kirkbride recounting ‘The Gruffalo’s Child’ by Julia Donaldson. Mr Kirkbride passed around a Gruffalo soft toy which the children all took turns to cuddle.

The reading scheme that Brooke Weston Academy donated was bought with proceeds from the recently published anthology of students’ work, called ‘The Gathering’. The book showcased the best of our students’ written work over the past year and there are plans to repeat, and even expand it for the next edition.

Mrs Fitzjohn said: ‘After liaising with the Oakley Vale we purchased four levels of the Ruth Miskin Read Write Inc reading scheme, which goes from the tiniest sound blending up to a more advanced level so hopefully that will help students in reception and beyond. It was a pleasure coming in to read to the students as fostering a love of words and stories early on in life is so important. We used the money from the anthology, written by students with a love of English and the spoken and written word, as it is a way of passing that enthusiasm and knowledge down to the next generation of readers and writers.’
