Young Innovators Shine at Brooke Weston Trust Big Idea Grand Final
Children from across Brooke Weston Trust came together at the NTSHub for the exciting Year 4 “Big Idea” Grand Final, showcasing creativity, teamwork and innovation as they presented inventions designed to solve real-world problems.
The Big Idea Competition challenges pupils to develop an environmentally friendly invention that addresses a problem they have identified in the wider world, their local community or their own daily lives. Throughout the competition, children work collaboratively to transform their ideas into prototypes, marketing materials and “Dragon’s Den”-style pitches before competing against other schools across the Trust.
The Grand Final brought together the winning teams from all six Brooke Weston Trust primary schools, each proudly representing their school with a unique invention. During the day, pupils took part in a variety of activities, including a spaghetti tower challenge, market research sessions, project evaluations and presentations to a panel of judges and invited guests from RS Components, who represented the world of business plus the senior leaders and a trustee of the Brooke Weston Trust.
The standard of entries was exceptionally high, with pupils demonstrating impressive problem-solving skills, creativity and entrepreneurial thinking. Inventions ranged from accessibility devices for people with disabilities to innovative products promoting communication, inclusion and environmental responsibility.
Celebrating the Winners
Overall Winner – Compass School
The team “World Changers” impressed the judges with The Translator, an electronic device designed to support people who do not speak English, earning them the title of Overall Winner. The team were awarded a trophy and a £100 Argos voucher, kindly donated by RS Components.
Overall Runner-Up – Peckover School
The Peckover Girls were recognised for “The Mood Glow Bracelet”, a bracelet that lights up to express the wearer’s mood, and also received the award for Best Teamwork.
Category Award Winners
- Best Prototype Design and Tallest Spaghetti Tower – Thrapston School, The Bosses, for The Crawler 3000, an all-terrain wheelchair designed to support disabled people in moving around.
- Best Pitch and Best Team Name – Oakley Vale School, The Dunkers, for their Basket Ball Bin, a waste bin that makes tidying up fun by encouraging users to throw rubbish through a hoop.
- Best Poster – Gretton School, Gretton Smart Dogs, for The Ball Launcher, a device designed to help people with disabilities throw a ball for their dog.
- Best Jingle – Beanfield School, Beanfield Big Hits, for the Talk O’ Bracelet, a bracelet linked to an earbud to help people who are blind navigate their surroundings.
Inspiring the Innovators of the Future
The Big Idea Competition is about much more than inventing new products. It encourages pupils to think critically about the world around them, work collaboratively, develop communication skills and gain confidence in presenting their ideas to a wider audience.
A huge congratulations goes to every pupil who took part. The enthusiasm, ingenuity and teamwork displayed throughout the competition was fantastic and demonstrated the incredible potential of Brooke Weston Trust’s young innovators.
